Planned Giving
Leave a Legacy
Turn your love for the arts into a lasting legacy with a planned gift to The Drama League. The Anne L. Bernstein Legacy Society recognizes the individuals who support The Drama League through their long-term financial plans.
Drama League programs are building a pipeline of directing talent that will bring incredible stories to our stages in the years to come; a gift in your will or estate plans can ensure that Drama League programs are available for future generations of visionary artists. There are many creative ways to make a planned gift that ensures The Drama League’s future while providing benefits for you and your loved ones. For more information or to notify us of an existing planned gift, contact Helen O’Rourke at 212-244-9494 x105 or helen@dramaleague.org.
Named for one of the theater community’s most steadfast supporters, the Anne L. Bernstein Legacy Society is a special group that shares the common bond of philanthropy and passion for The Drama League’s mission to support emerging artists. We are honored to celebrate our planned giving donors throughout their lifetime with special opportunities including invitations to an annual appreciation event with our Board of Directors. We invite you to join with other compassionate friends who share your commitment to uplifting the arts community.
To include The Drama League in your estate plans, please provide your attorney with the following information:
Legal Name: Drama League of New York, Inc.
Tax Identification #: 13-6160961
The Drama League is a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and, further, is not a private foundation under section 509(a). Gifts and bequests to The Drama League are deductible for income, gift, and estate tax purposes to the extent permitted by law.
Giving Options
Bequest
Bequests allow you to make a contribution without reducing current income by designating a fixed dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to The Drama League in your will. A gift for our general purposes is most helpful, as it allows us to use your gift to support directors in the most impactful way possible; should you desire to designate your gift more specifically, we are happy to discuss that in further detail. The following is an example of language that could be used to prepare wills containing a bequest to The Drama League:
“I give, devise, and bequeath to The Drama League, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization having its principal office at 32 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10013, $____/______%, to be used for general purposes”
Gifts of Stock or Other Assets
In addition to cash gifts, you can bequeath specific assets such as shares of stock, savings bonds, or appreciated securities. You can also instruct your brokerage firm to “transfer on death” to The Drama League some or all of a specific brokerage or other financial account
Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designation
You may name the The Drama League (Tax ID #13-6160961) as a beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement benefits. Making a charitable gift from your retirement plan is easy and should not cost you any attorney fees. Simply request a change-of-beneficiary form from your plan administrator. When you have finished, please return the form to your plan administrator and notify The Drama League.
Naming The Drama League as the beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan asset such as a 401(k), 403(b), IRA, Keogh or profit-sharing pension plan will accomplish a charitable goal while realizing significant tax savings. It can be costly to pass such assets on to heirs because of heavy tax consequences. By naming The Drama League as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, the donor maintains complete control over the asset while living, but at the donor’s death, the plan passes to support The Drama League free of both estate and income taxes. Donors should consult with their tax advisor regarding the tax benefits of such gifts.
Donor Advised Fund
You may name non-profit organizations such as The Drama League to receive the remainder of your donor advised fund simply by filling out a change-of-beneficiary form – no lawyer is required. If you do not name a beneficiary of your donor advised fund, the plan administrator will add it to their charitable funds and distribute as they decide with no link to the organizations that were supported at your direction.

Charitable Trusts
Create a trust that provides income for yourself (or you and a loved one) during your life and leave a gift for The Drama League after you no longer need it (or after 20 years).
Life Insurance
After your lifetime and/or the lifetime of another designated beneficiary, you can designate that the remaining balance of your life insurance policy goes to The Drama League to be used according to your instructions.
The Anne L. Bernstein Legacy Society
The Drama League gratefully acknowledges these individuals who ensure the future of The Drama League by making a planned gift.
Producer and philanthropist Anne Bernstein was a lifelong lover of the arts and a strong supporter of the theater. A longtime Drama League Member and donor, she also served on the boards of The Acting Company, Transport Group, Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In addition, there is an acting scholarship at Juilliard and a theater in Times Square named in her honor. We are so grateful for the generosity she showed during her lifetime and for her support of emerging artists in her estate plan.
