Kamilah Forbes

Contribution to the Theater Award

Kamilah Forbes is an award-winning director and producer for theater and television who currently serves as the Executive Producer at the world famous Apollo Theater. Kamilah’s directing credits include “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark,” written by Pulitzer prize-winning writer Lynn Nottage, “Blood Quilt” written by Katori Hall, and “Sunset Baby” by MacArthur genius Dominique Morrisseau. She has also worked as associate director for Tony award-winning “A Raisin in the Sun,” and Emmy award-winning “The Wiz Live for NBC.” Additional Broadway credits include “Mountaintop,” and “Stick Fly”.

Kamilah has produced several works for television, most notably the seventh season of the Tony Award and Peabody Award-winning series “Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry on HBO.” She was also a co-executive producer on the “Brave New Voices” documentary series on HBO, in addition to executive producing the PBS special “The Women’s List.”

As a graduate of Howard University, Kamilah’s recent projects include directing the sold-out world premiere, tour, and theatrical adaption of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ New York Times best-selling novel “Between the World and Me.” In addition to her work at the Apollo Theater, Kamilah is set to direct the Broadway premiere of “Soul Train” alongside Questlove, Dominique Morrisseau and Camille A. Brown.

Kamilah Forbes is a powerful leader, widely known for her ability and commitment to continue to highlight the ideas, complexities and work of artists in the hip-hop community and beyond.

Caissie Levy

Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater

Caissie Levy is an Olivier and Grammy-nominated veteran of nine Broadway productions, three West End shows, and seven original cast albums. She is currently starring on Broadway in Lincoln Center Theater’s acclaimed revival of Ragtime, directed by Lear deBessonet. She earned an Olivier nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for starring in the UK premiere of Next to Normal in London’s West End and at The Donmar Warehouse, which subsequently aired on PBS and is currently available on BroadwayHD. Caissie created the iconic role of ‘Elsa’ in Disney’s Frozen on Broadway, starred in the Tony Award winning Broadway production of Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt, and as ‘Rose’ in the Tony nominated Broadway revival of Caroline, or Change, for which she was nominated for a Grammy Award. She is known to Broadway and West End audiences for originating the roles of ‘Sheila’ in the Tony Award winning revival of Hair, and ‘Molly’ in Ghost. Other Broadway credits include ‘Fantine’ in Les Miserables; ‘Elphaba’ in Wicked (also LA); ‘Penny’ in Hairspray (Broadway debut, also 1st national tour & Toronto); ‘Maureen’ in Rent (national tour). Off -Broadway credits include Sarah Silverman’s The Bedwetter (Atlantic); First Daughter Suite (The Public); and Murder Ballad (MTC). Caissie has been featured on many singer/songwriter’s records, and her solo EP, With You, is available wherever you buy or stream your music. In concert, she backed up Sir Rod Stewart in his Las Vegas residency, headlined Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops twice, and has played solo across the US, UK and Canada. @caissielevy

David Cromer

David Cromer is a director and actor originally from Chicago, currently based in New York. For his work he has received a Tony Award, a Drama Desk, three Obies and three Lortels, and in 2010 he was named a MacArthur Foundation fellow.

Scott Ellis

Gratitude Award

Scott Ellis has enjoyed an extraordinarily successful career, earning nine Tony Award nominations for his work in both commercial and non-profit theater. Some of Scott’s Tony Award-nominated productions include Curtains, Steel Pier, You Can’t Take It with You, The Elephant Man, and Tootsie. He also directed the Tony Award-winning revival of Take Me Out

 

Scott is currently the Interim Artistic Director of Roundabout Theatre Company, where he has been a key artistic leader for more than two decades. He made his Roundabout debut in 1993 with the acclaimed revival of She Loves Me, the company’s first-ever musical, which later transferred to London’s West End and earned an Olivier Award. Ellis became Roundabout’s Associate Artistic Director in 1998, and the 2024–2025 season marked his first full year leading the institution as Interim Artistic Director. Recent Roundabout productions include the Broadway revivals of Doubt, Pirates! The Penzance Musical, and the upcoming revival of Noel Coward’s Fallen Angels, starring Rose Byrne and Kelli O’Hara.

 

Other Broadway credits include Kiss Me, Kate; On the Twentieth Century; Harvey; The Little Dog Laughed; Twelve Angry Men; A Month in the Country; Company; The Man Who Had All the Luck; and The Rainmaker. This past fall, he directed a new revival of Art starring Bobby Cannavale, James Corden, and Neil Patrick Harris.

 

Off-Broadway, Ellis has directed Amy and the Orphans, The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin, Dada Woof Papa Hot, Gruesome Playground Injuries, Streamers, Good Boys and True, Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Flora the Red Menace (Drama Desk nomination), And the World Goes ’Round (Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards), and The Waverly Gallery.

 

For television, Ellis served as executive producer on Weeds and has directed episodes of 30 Rock (Emmy Award nomination for Best Director), Modern Family, The Closer, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Étoile.

For 25 years, Scott has been a mentor with the Wendy Wasserstein Project through the Theatrical Development Fund, working with over 250 students.

Keeping in the tradition of honoring the outstanding accomplishments of the theatrical community, as they have since 1935, The Drama League Awards will be bestowed in the following competitive categories:

  • Distinguished Performance Award
  • Outstanding Direction of a Play
  • Outstanding Direction of a Musical
  • Outstanding Production of a Play
  • Outstanding Production of a Musical
  • Outstanding Revival of a Play
  • Outstanding Revival of a Musical

Broadway and Off-Broadway (non-virtual only) productions eligible for the 2026 Drama League Awards must be in preview performances between April 21, 2025, and April 18, 2026 (inclusive of evening performances).

Nathan Lane

Annaleigh Ashford is a Tony Award-winning, Emmy and Grammy-nominated actor, singer, and writer who is currently starring in the Paramount+ Original Series Happy Face. Ashford most recently earned the 2023 Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance, a Tony Award nomination, and a Drama Desk Award for her portrayal of Mrs. Lovett opposite Josh Groban in the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Her NY stage credits include Sunday in the Park with George (opposite Jake Gyllenhaal), You Can’t Take It With You (Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award), Sylvia, Kinky Boots (Clarence Derwent Award; Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle nominations), Wicked, Hair, Legally Blonde the Musical, and All In. Off-Broadway, she appeared in Sunday in the Park with George (Encores!), Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park), Rent (New World Stages), and Dogfight (Second Stage). On screen, Ashford’s credits include Happy Face, Dust, Welcome to Chippendales, American Crime Story: Impeachment, B Positive, Unbelievable, Masters of Sex, Law & Order: SVU, Second Act, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Disney’s Frozen. She holds an honorary doctorate from Marymount Manhattan College, where she also graduated.
