Lillie’s Victorian Establishment – Times Square
249 West 49th Street (between Broadway and 8th Avenue)
New York, NY 10019
Operating hours: Daily, 11 am to 4 am

Lillie’s Victorian Establishment combines an authentic ostentatious decor with a down-to-earth, mellow ambience that recalls the great Victorian “gin palaces” that once flourished in the industrial cities of Northern Ireland and England. Lillie’s is named for Lillie Langtry,  a highly successful British actress, renowned beauty, and socialite of the late 19th century who was notorious for her long list of prominent suitors, which included the future King of England, Edward VII. She made her American debut in New York in 1882. Lillie’s serves an eclectic, traditional menu and offers an impressive range of over fifty domestic and imported beers, both on tap and bottled, as well as a fine selection of whiskeys and scotches. Most of the hand-picked selection of wines actually come from the Langtry estate in California, which was founded by Lillie herself in 1888. The antique, carved-wood bar and furnishings that make Lillie’s so distincctive were acquired from a Victorian mansion in Belfast, Ireland. Great care was taken to have them preserved, wrapped and shipped across the Atlantic to their new home in Times Square at the heart of New York City.

Chez Josephine
414 West 42nd Street (between 9th and 10th Avenues)

A pioneer in the revival of 42nd Street since 1986, Chez Josephine is a bubbly return to the joie de vivre of Paris of the 1930s: Le Jazz Hot with soul. A tribute to Josephine Baker, the restaurant and its live music exude theatrical panache. Recently remodeled, and with a private party room, this landmark jewel is inviting and romantic, with a blue-tin ceiling, red velvet walls, and a cavalcade of chandeliers lighting up its collection of vintage portraits of La Baker. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavors. The late owner Jean-Claude Baker (adopted son of Josephine) called his clientele a “cocktail of human beings”: a medley of celebrities, local color and devotees from all over the world. The kitchen stays open until1 AM, making this an ideal gathering place for both pre- and after-play.
