The 78th Annual Drama League Awards

Don’t miss the star-studded finale to the Drama League year! Join the brightest stars of the season to honor the best plays, musicals, and actors of 2011-12 at the 78th Annual Drama League Awards…chosen by you! Includes Cocktail Reception, Luncheon, and Awards. Held in the elegant Marriott Marquis Times Square Ballroom, stars from stage, screen, television and music will come together to celebrate the season.

Tony Award winners Stockard Channing and John Larroquette will host the 78th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony. Honorary Co-Chairs for the event include Nina Arianda, Christian Borle, Norbert Leo Butz, Kathleen Chalfant, Raúl Esparza, Rosemary Harris, Jeremy Jordan, Christine Lahti, Linda Lavin, Norm Lewis, Judith Light, Audra McDonald, Cynthia Nixon and Blair Underwood.

The Drama League will honor three theatre luminaries with Lifetime Achievement Awards at this year’s ceremony: eight-time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken (Newsies, Leap of Faith, Sister Act) will receive theDistinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre Award. Emmy Award winner Rosie O’Donnell (Fiddler on the Roof,Suessical, Grease) will receive the Unique Contribution to the Theatre Award. Tony nominee and Drama League Directors Project alum Diane Paulus (The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess, HAIR) will receive The Founders Award for Excellence in Directing.

Additionally, The Drama League will present five competitive awards: Distingushed Production of a Play, Distinguished Production of a Musical, Distinguished Revival of a Play, Distinguished Revival of a Musical, and the Distinguished Performance Award. First awarded in 1922 and formalized in 1935, The Drama League Awards are the oldest theatrical honors in America. They are the only major theatergoer awards chosen by audience members — specifically, by the thousands of Drama League members nationwide who attend Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.

Lauded as “a wonderful, notoriously swanky affair” by Playbill and as “the best party on Broadway” by John Lithgow, the Awards Luncheon is considered the most intimate, friendly, and enjoyable event in the awards season.
