The New York Fall Directing Program

THE NEW YORK FALL DIRECTING PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO IMMERSE FOUR DIRECTORS IN THE MYRIAD DIRECTING OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN THE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE — BOTH REGIONALLY AND IN NEW YORK.

For 2013, the New York Fall Directing Program will contain four components:

Professionals Week, the first component, begins in mid-May. The Fellows selected for every program will come together in New York City for an intensive orientation program week in the professional theatre.  All Fellows will meet with members of the NY theatre community, attend performances and participate in seminars and workshops with prominent industry professionals – in both the nonprofit and commercial theatre. Upon its completion, Fall Fellows will be free until August.

Re-Gathering and Retreat, the second component, begins in late-August.  The four Fall Fellows will re-gather in New York for a weekend meeting and Fall Program orientation.  They will then participate in our Fall Retreat- an extended directing workshop under the direction of a master director/teacher. Eight professional actors will join the directors for an immersion in a text. (?)

Assistantships are the third component of the program. The Fall Fellows will assist on fully-staged productions at major regional and/or New York theatres with leading theatre artists.  Each Fellow completes one or two assisting assignments depending on length. These are designed for each director’s needs and theatrical interests, and will address specific weaknesses in training.

DirectorFest is the final component of the program. The Fall Fellows stage an evening of one-act plays in New York City for an audience that includes artistic directors, producers, and other interested industry professionals. DirectorFest is produced Off-Broadway utilizing professional casting directors, designers and production personnel. Post-production, the directors meet with theatre professionals for an in-depth discussion of their work.

Four directors are selected for the New York Fall Directing Program.  They are provided with housing during orientation periods, transportation and housing for their regional assignments and a stipend to cover living expenses.

“The Drama League took a risk and gave me an opportunity no one else would – they produced a play I directed in the heart of New York City and invited everyone to see it.  Every professional opportunity I’ve had since is the result of that chance they took on someone unknown and untested.  I will always be eternally grateful to The Drama League for their belief in me and for the continued nurturing that has endured over the years.”

– Mark Brokaw, Fall Program 1986
Director of the Broadway musical Cinderella
