THE MUSICAL THEATRE DIRECTING PROGRAM
THE MUSICAL THEATRE DIRECTING PROGRAM IS A TWO-MONTH IMMERSION IN THE ART AND CRAFT OF DEVELOPING AND DIRECTING NEW WORKS FOR THE MUSICAL THEATRE.
The Musical Directing Program lasts for approximately 10 weeks. It is split into two parts – an orientation in New York and a regional theatre residency — and the Fellow needs to be available for both parts.
The first part is Professionals Week — an intensive one-week orientation in mid-May. The Directing Fellows selected for all our programs will come together in New York City for an intensive orientation week in the professional theatre. All Fellows will meet with members of the NY theatre community, attend performances, and participate in seminars and workshops with prominent industry professionals — in both the nonprofit and commercial theatre. There will then be a break of three to four weeks before the summer residency commences.
The second part will be held from mid-June to mid-August at Barrington Stage Company, a nonprofit theatre located in Pittsfield, Mass. The Musical Fellow will work in the Musical Theatre Lab (MTL), overseen by composer/lyricist William Finn. MTL was created in 2006 as a place for young musical theater writers to develop their work on all levels. In its short existence, MTL has produced many world premieres and workshops. During the residency at Barrington Stage, two musicals from young artistic teams will be developed and produced. Each musical will be directed by a prominent director experienced in musical theatre, and the Musical Fellow will assist the directors and artistic teams of both productions. In addition, the Fellow may have the opportunity to do his own work, directing a short musical piece selected for development by MTL.
One director will be selected for the 2013 Musical Directing Program. We seek a director with musical directing experience and/or a background in music. The Fellow will be provided with housing during the orientation period in New York City, transportation from New York to Pittsfield, Mass., housing at Barrington Stage Company, and a stipend to cover living expenses.
