New Directors/New Works
THE NEW DIRECTORS/NEW WORKS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW THEATRE WORKS WITH THE DISTINCT VISION OF COMMITTED THEATRE DIRECTORS AND THEIR COLLABORATORS.
The New Directors/New Works Program provides selected director-collaborator teams the opportunity to workshop new material without the outside pressure of producers and critics. The director’s collaborator(s) may be a playwright, composer, designer, acting company, dramaturg, etc. The application is a joint effort of the collaborators, but it can only be submitted by the directing candidate.
We are looking for projects that will benefit from a developmental workshop – to explore a new script, or to try out a new translation/adaptation. We are not a reading series, nor are we looking for finished projects ready for production. We will not consider such projects. We are interested in new and untried projects that can benefit from a rehearsal environment with no predetermined expectations or results.
A key component of this program is the applicant’s nomination of a professional mentor – a distinguished master writer, director, dramaturg, etc. who provides guidance to help the artistic team discover the full potential of the material. Applicants are asked to include the names of two possible mentors.
New Directors/New Works supports one-to-three projects each year. Each director is provided with a stipend for production expenses, and up to four weeks of rehearsal/presentation space.
Duration: Year Round Flexible Schedule
Application Deadline: February 1st
Eligibility:
* Candidates must have completed their undergraduate degree.
* Candidates must have directed at least three professional productions.
“As a mid-career director, I found the Drama League’s support to be invaluable at a time when I needed to stretch my own vision. My adventures within the New Directors/New Works program were the most demanding and thrilling I have had in the theatre.”
– Loretta Greco, New Directors/New Works 1998, 1999
Artistic Director, Magic Theatre
