Summer Directing Program

THE SUMMER DIRECTING PROGRAM IS AN INTENSIVE PRACTICUM IN THE ARTISTIC LIFE OF A REGIONAL THEATRE — FELLOWS EXPERIENCE DAILY LIFE AS BOTH A WORKING DIRECTOR AND AS AN ARTISTIC LEADER.

Due to the renovation of The Hangar Theatre, the Summer Directing Program will undergo changes for the 2010 season.  The program will contain the same elements, but the season will be abridged, running for approximately 8-9 weeks.  Due to the shorter schedule, the Summer Program will only take 3 Fellows.

The Summer Directing Program begins with an orientation week in New York City. The Summer Directors meet with members of the professional theatre community, attend theatre and participate in workshops and seminars. The rest of the fellowship take place at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, New York, a nonprofit theatre that produces a diverse summer season on two stages.

The Summer Directors are the artistic leaders of the Hangar’s Lab Company, a non-Equity company comprised of young professionals in acting, design, directing, and stage management. Working with the support and guidance of Hangar artistic staff, the directors are responsible for selecting, designing, casting and producing the entire Lab Company season.  To learn more about the Lab Company click HERE.

Each Fellow will direct three productions in the 2010 summer season: a mainstage children’s show and two new plays with a playwright-in-residence. In addition, each director has the opportunity to interact with and learn from the artists working on the mainstage, and meet regularly with the Hangar’s artistic director, Peter Flynn.

Three directors will be selected for the 2010 Summer Directing Program. They are provided with housing during the orientation period, transportation from New York City to Ithaca, housing, and a stipend to cover living expenses.

“My Drama League fellowship was a turning point in my life as well as in my career.  The amazing summer of 1989 was the very first opportunity I’d ever had to experience life as a full-time theatre director: each day directing plays, talking about directing, watching other directors…eating and breathing directing.  I can’t imagine my life without that summer.”
