Fall Directing Program

THE FALL DIRECTING PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO IMMERSE FOUR FELLOWS IN THE MYRIAD DIRECTING OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN THE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE — BOTH REGIONALLY AND IN NEW YORK.

The Fall Directing Program has three components.  The first section is an intensive two-week orientation program in mid-August.  During Week 1, the four Fall Directors meet with members of the professional theatre community, attend performances and participate in seminars and workshops with prominent theatre professionals.  Week 2 is an extended directing workshop with a master director and professional actors.

During the second section of the program, each Fall Director completes one or two assistant directing assignments. These assignments are specifically designed for each director’s individual needs and theatrical interests. The Fall Directors will assist on fully-staged productions at major regional and/or New York theatres with leading theatre artists.

In the final section of the program, the Fall Directors stage an evening of one-act plays in New York City for an audience that includes artistic directors, producers, and other interested industry professionals. DirectorFest is produced Off-Broadway utilizing professional casting directors, designers and production personnel. Post-production, the directors meet with theatre professionals for an in-depth discussion of their work.

Four directors are selected for the Fall Directing Program.  They are provided with housing during the two-week orientation period, transportation and housing for their regional assignments and a stipend to cover living expenses.

“The Drama League took a risk and gave me an opportunity no one else would – they produced a play          I directed in the heart of New York City and invited everyone to see it.  Every professional opportunity I’ve had since is the result of that chance they took on someone unknown and untested.  I will always be eternally grateful to The Drama League for their belief in me and for the continued nurturing that has endured over the years.”
